The viability of the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been cast into serious doubt following direct threats issued by an armed opposition group against high-profile international players. According to reports from NDTV Sports and The Sunday Guardian, the militant group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar has publicly warned overseas cricketers, specifically mentioning Australian veterans David Warner and Steve Smith, as well as New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, to withdraw from the tournament immediately.
The group’s commander stated to The Sunday Guardian that while they do not oppose the sport itself, they believe the current security climate in Pakistan is entirely unsuitable for hosting an international event of this magnitude. In a stern communiqué, the group declared that it would not take responsibility for the safety of any foreign player who chooses to ignore the warning. Furthermore, the organization vowed to use its full capacity to disrupt matches and prevent the tournament from proceeding as scheduled.

This development follows an earlier announcement by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who confirmed that the 2026 season would be heavily restricted. Due to the ongoing West Asia conflict and a domestic fuel crisis, the PCB had already planned to host matches behind closed doors in only two cities, Lahore and Karachi.
However, these new security threats have added a layer of geopolitical complexity. According to ANI and Islamabad Post, the ultimatum has left international cricket boards and players weighing their professional commitments against significant personal risks. With the group threatening to ensure players “do not take to the field,” the PCB faces an uphill battle to salvage the tournament’s integrity and safety.
