Glasgow: India’s star weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu opened the country’s gold medal account at the Commonwealth Games. She became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at this edition of the Games.
Mirabai clinched the her Hat-Trick CWG gold medal in the women’s 48kg category on Saturday, setting new Commonwealth Games records in the process.
The 31-year-old lifted 85kg in the snatch to establish a new Commonwealth Games record. She followed it up with another record in the clean and jerk by lifting 105kg, finishing with a combined total of 190kg.
Mirabai has now won gold medals at three consecutive Commonwealth Games. She had earlier claimed the top honour in the 2018 and 2022 editions.
The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist had also won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were held in Glasgow.
