Becomes the First Player in World Cup History to Score in Seven Consecutive Matches
Dallas: Defending champions Argentina completed a perfect league-stage campaign at the FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Jordan on Sunday. Led by Lionel Messi, Argentina registered their third consecutive win to advance to the knockout round with a 100 per cent winning record.
Argentina and Jordan Meet for the First Time
Argentina and Jordan faced each other for the first time in international football, and the Asian side experienced the fighting spirit of the reigning world champions firsthand.
Having already secured qualification for the knockout stage before this match, Argentina rested several key players. Captain Lionel Messi also started on the bench, watching the game closely and occasionally guiding his teammates from the sidelines.
Argentina were comfortably leading 2-0 until the 55th minute, when Jordan’s Mousa Al-Tamari pulled one back to make it 2-1. Sensing the momentum shifting, Messi began warming up and entered the field in the 60th minute. Twenty minutes later, he produced a stunning long-range strike from well outside the penalty area to restore Argentina’s two-goal cushion and seal a 3-1 victory.
Another World Record, Followed by His Historic 19th World Cup Goal
At 39, Lionel Messi has become the first player in World Cup history to score in seven consecutive matches. His tally of 19 World Cup goals is now the highest by any player in the tournament’s history.
Argentina scored eight goals in their three league-stage matches, with Messi accounting for six of them.
Against Jordan on Sunday, Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Lautaro Martinez doubled Argentina’s lead in the 31st minute. Argentina had scored five goals in their first two league matches, and all five had come from Messi.
