Ishan Kishan Played T20 World Cup Final Despite Family Tragedy Days Before Match

Ahmedabad: Indian cricketer Ishan Kishan displayed remarkable resilience during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, helping India secure the title despite facing a devastating personal loss just days before the match.

According to a report by NDTV, Kishan learned that his cousin and brother-in-law had died in a car accident on Friday, only two days before the tournament’s final. The tragic news deeply affected his family and forced his father, Pranav Pandey, to cancel plans to travel to Ahmedabad to watch the match in person.

Speaking to Times of India, Kishan’s father said the family was in shock following the sudden tragedy. He revealed that the batter had wanted to return home after hearing the news but was unable to do so because of the crucial final match approaching.

Despite the emotional circumstances, Kishan remained with the Indian squad and took part in the final against New Zealand national cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Teammates reportedly rallied around him during training sessions, offering support as he dealt with the personal loss.

On the field, Kishan delivered an impressive performance. The wicketkeeper-batter scored a half-century and also contributed in the field with key catches, playing an important role in India’s dominant showing in the final.

India eventually defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to lift the trophy, successfully defending their title and claiming their third T20 World Cup championship.

Kishan’s performance under such difficult circumstances highlighted both his mental strength and commitment to the national team. His contribution added another significant chapter to India’s victorious campaign in the tournament.
