Nagoya: Karnataka’s Pranavi Urs has become the first Indian woman golfer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. She completed the four-round individual competition with a score of 15-under 265, finishing at the top of the leaderboard to claim the championship. Olympian Aditi Ashok had won a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games in China.

The 23-year-old from Mysuru achieved the historic feat by defeating former world number one Yin Ruoning of China, who won the silver medal. Pranavi’s victory also ended India’s 24-year wait for an Asian Games golf gold medal. At the 2002 Busan Asian Games, Shiv Kapur had won the men’s golf gold medal for India.

Pranavi had also helped India win a team silver medal on Saturday. She made a major contribution to the silver-winning performance with a score of 14-under 564. Besides Pranavi, India’s team included Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar. With Aditi carding 67 and Diksha 77 in the final round, India secured the team silver. Overall, India finished with a score of 14-under 546 to take second place and the silver medal. China won the team gold with a score of 22-under 538.

Golf was introduced to the Asian Games in 1982, and India’s performance this time has been its best ever since the sport was included in the continental event.
