Kakamigahara (Japan): The Indian men’s hockey team made a sensational start to their Asian Games campaign on Sunday, defeating Indonesia 13-1 in their Pool A opener. Striker Dilpreet Singh won everyone’s hearts with a four-goal blitz. What made his performance even more special was that none of his four goals came from penalty corners; all four were field goals.

Dilpreet scored in the 18th, 19th, 37th and 39th minutes. Shilanand Lakra scored twice in the 6th and 35th minutes, while Sukhjeet Singh also netted twice in the 38th and 48th minutes. The other scorers were Abhishek, Rajinder, Mandeep Singh, captain Harmanpreet Singh and Jugraj Singh.

Indonesia’s only goal was scored by Oulia Al Aardh in the 33rd minute. Apart from that, Indonesia’s players could not breach India’s strong defence.

The Indian men’s team will next face Sri Lanka on Tuesday. After the match against Indonesia, Dilpreet said, “We played with tremendous teamwork. We are helping each other very well on the field. All the teams at this Games are capable, so we will not take any opponent lightly.”
