The Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Friday that the men’s cricket teams of the two nations will play a single Twenty20 International match to kick off the festivities of the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations. Later this month, on September 22, the two teams will play their first-ever international match at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture.
This competition will be the first phase of “Sport 75,” an initiative that is based on an agreement reached during a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that aims to promote human exchanges and cooperation between India and Japan in the field of sports, the board said in a release, taking into account India’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.
“The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated in response to the momentous decision. This is a momentous occasion for cricket, as it allows the Indian team to venture into uncharted territory and presents a chance to expand the sport’s reach in Japan and East Asia.
“We are happy that cricket will be included in the festivities commemorating 75 years of bilateral relations between India and Japan, and we thank the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) for its efforts in making this fixture possible. India and Japan have a strong and long-standing friendship and relationship.
As the largest cricket board in the world, the BCCI recognizes its obligation to support the expansion of cricket outside its traditional borders. In the upcoming years, the BCCI will collaborate closely with the JCA to further develop cricket in Japan.
“To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association,” continued Naoki Miyaji, CEO of the Japan Cricket Association. We are grateful to the BCCI for collaborating with us to achieve this aim, and we eagerly anticipate receiving the fervor of Indian cricket fans. We also actively invite any local Japanese individuals who are interested in cricket to join us in supporting our team on what will undoubtedly be an unforgettable occasion.
