Colombo: India’s dependable Test opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal had played in Pallekele in Sri Lanka two years ago, but this is his first visit to Colombo, and he lost his wicket for a duck off just the second ball he faced today.
In India’s only warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI, the 58-match international veteran Yashasvi (Yashasvi) missed a valuable opportunity to get some batting practice. Facing left-arm pace bowler Vishwa Fernando, he edged a delivery straight to Dilum Sudhira Tillakaratne, who was stationed at backward point.
Sri Lanka Cricket XI declared their first innings at 8/363 in this three-day match. India had barely begun its innings when Yashasvi threw away his wicket.
Yashasvi opened the innings with stand-in captain KL Rahul. Shubman Gill did not play on Friday, the opening day, due to a finger injury, which led to Rahul being handed the captaincy. At the time of writing, India had reached 67 for one in 17 overs, with Rahul batting on 23 and Devdutt Padikkal on 44.
The match began on Friday, with the hosts opting to bat and declaring their innings at 363 for eight. Sri Lanka made a strong start, but after lunch, India struck with three wickets in quick succession. However, thanks to a half-century from captain Gamage Sonal Dinusha, the Sri Lankan team managed to cross the 300-run mark.
The pitch offered greater assistance to the spinners. India picked up four wickets in the final session. Spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar took two wickets each, while fast bowler Gurnoor Brar claimed one.
On the second day of the three-day match, India’s batsmen are now being put to the test. Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja are still to bat in India’s line-up. Shubman Gill could also come out to bat if he is declared fit after recovering from his injury.
