Ahmedabad: Gujarat defeated Chennai by 89 runs here on Thursday to further strengthen their position in the top two of the points table. On the other hand, Chennai became the third team after Mumbai and Lucknow to be eliminated from the playoff race. After Gujarat posted 229 for four, Chennai were bowled out for 140 in the 14th over.
Chennai lost four wickets in the last 10 balls of their innings. Shivam Dube’s 47 was the highest score for the team. For Gujarat, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan claimed three wickets each to knock Chennai out of the competition. Title favourites Gujarat completed their league campaign with 18 points, equal to Bengaluru.
Half-centuries from all top three batters
Earlier, Gujarat scored 229 for four in 20 overs to set Chennai a challenging target of 230. Once again, Gujarat’s top order delivered an outstanding performance. Half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan (84 off 53 balls, four sixes, seven fours), captain Shubman Gill (64 off 37 balls, three sixes, seven fours) and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler (57 not out off 27 balls, four sixes, five fours) once again proved that Gujarat possess the best top order in this year’s tournament.

Openers Gill and Sudharsan added 125 runs for the first wicket. Spencer Johnson, Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj took one wicket each. The opening partnership between Sudharsan and Gill proved decisive for Chennai.
