New Delhi: Cricket is a game of uncertainties, and in a T20 match, anything can happen at the peak of excitement—and that is exactly what unfolded in Delhi on Wednesday. Delhi Capitals let a winning game slip from their grasp and suffered their first defeat of the season. Gujarat Titans (210/4 in 20 overs) edged past Delhi Capitals (209/8 in 20 overs) in a nail-biting contest. This was Gujarat’s first win of the season—and it came by just one run.
KL Rahul’s brilliant knock of 92 runs off 52 balls (four sixes, eleven fours) ultimately went in vain. David Miller (41* off 20 balls, three sixes, three fours), who had retired hurt earlier due to an injury sustained while batting, returned to the crease despite discomfort in his hand and nearly took Delhi to victory.
With two runs needed off the fifth ball of the final over bowled by Prasidh Krishna, Miller opted against taking a single and sent Kuldeep back, aiming to finish the game with a boundary on the last ball. However, on the final delivery, Kuldeep was run out by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. There was a brief suspicion of a wide ball, but it was not given, and Delhi’s innings ended in heartbreak. Rashid Khan claimed three wickets, while Prasidh Krishna took two and Mohammed Siraj picked up one.
Earlier, Vipraj Nigam was dismissed for 12 runs (two fours) in the 20th over by Prasidh Krishna.
In what turned out to be a high-scoring and challenging chase against Gujarat, Delhi found themselves in deep trouble at one stage. The 76-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka (41 runs) provided a solid start, but things quickly unraveled.
Nissanka and Nitish Rana (5) fell in quick succession, followed by Sameer Rizvi (0), the hero of the previous two matches, who was dismissed on the very first ball he faced. Spinner Rashid Khan clean bowled him, sending Rana and Rizvi back in consecutive deliveries.
Nissanka was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna. Meanwhile, David Miller, who was on 12 runs in the 13th over, suffered a hand injury while diving to make his ground and had to retire hurt. It is believed he had also sustained a minor injury earlier while fielding. Following his departure, Axar Patel also lost his wicket. Tristan Stubbs (7) was run out, and later KL Rahul was caught behind by Jos Buttler off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling.

Earlier in the match, Gujarat Titans made full use of batting first, posting a formidable total of 210/4 in 20 overs, setting Delhi a challenging target of 211. Captain Shubman Gill (70 off 45 balls, five sixes, four fours), Jos Buttler (52 off 27 balls, five sixes, three fours), and Washington Sundar (55 off 32 balls, two sixes, six fours) played crucial roles in making the task difficult for Delhi.
After losing opener Sai Sudharsan (12), Gujarat stitched together key partnerships—60 runs for the second wicket between Gill and Buttler, followed by a 104-run stand for the third wicket between Gill and Sundar.
