India have retained their position as the world’s top-ranked T20I side in the latest ICC team rankings update released on Tuesday, May 5 and will travel to England as the number one team following the conclusion of IPL 2026. Suryakumar Yadav’s side has 275 points, with England second on 262 and Australia third on 258.
Back-to-Back World Cup Winners
India’s hold on the top ranking is backed by an unprecedented run of dominance between 2024 and 2026. The Men in Blue became the first team in history to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title, winning both editions the 2024 tournament in the Americas and the 2026 edition on home soil.
In the 2024 final in Barbados, India defeated South Africa a match that also marked the final T20I appearance of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Two years later, SKY’s side defeated New Zealand in a one-sided final in March 2026 to complete the historic back-to-back defence.
