New Chandigarh/Kingston : Fifteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has continued to take the cricketing world by storm. The youngster from Bihar smashed a breathtaking 97 off just 29 balls, including 12 sixes and five fours, in Rajasthan’s IPL 2026 Eliminator victory over Hyderabad at Mullanpur on Wednesday. In the process, he broke one of Chris Gayle’s most celebrated IPL records and earned praise from the legendary West Indian himself.
Soon after Rajasthan Royals defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 47 runs to stay alive in the tournament, Gayle congratulated Vaibhav through his official social media account. The former T20 superstar shared a graphic featuring the teenager with the caption “Universal Baby Boss 97 (29)”, a nod to Gayle’s own famous nickname, “Universe Boss.”
Vaibhav Breaks Gayle’s Long-Standing Sixes Record
Vaibhav has surpassed Gayle’s record of 59 sixes in a single IPL season. The Rajasthan Royals opener now has 65 sixes to his name this season, with matches still left to play, raising the possibility of extending the record even further.
Why Gayle’s Praise Matters
Gayle is widely regarded as one of the most destructive batters in T20 cricket history. The West Indian legend has hit 1,056 sixes in T20 cricket, the highest tally by any batter in the format, and has long been known across the cricketing world as the “Universe Boss.”
Praising the teenager, Gayle wrote: “Vaibhav is such an extraordinary and amazing player. Young man, you entertained everyone. New six machine.”
For a player of Gayle’s stature to describe a youngster as a “six machine” highlights the impact Vaibhav has made with his fearless power-hitting throughout the season.
Orange Cap Holder
Vaibhav’s sensational form has not been limited to six-hitting. The Rajasthan Royals star now leads the IPL 2026 run-scoring charts with 680 runs, putting him in possession of the Orange Cap. He has overtaken Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan, who has scored 652 runs this season.
