From Hospital Bed to the Gold Medal Podium: The Inspiring Story Behind Boxer Jaismine Lamboria’s Triumph

Glasgow: India’s women boxer Jaismine Lamboria overcame months of illness and a hospital stay to script an inspiring comeback, winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland on Saturday.

Jaismine defeated Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh 5-0 in the final of the women’s 57kg category to clinch the gold medal. She had earlier won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Many would assume that Jaismine arrived in Scotland after months of intense preparation. However, the reality was very different. A few months before leaving for Scotland, she suffered from a prolonged high fever that forced her to undergo hospital treatment. Her health remained poor for several months. While athletes usually begin preparing for a major boxing event months in advance, Jaismine could only resume training in early July ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

ㅤJaismine’s dedication to boxing has been extraordinary. Despite battling a high fever in March, she competed in the Asian Championships and won a silver medal. That impressive performance also helped her qualify for this edition of the Commonwealth Games.

ㅤAfter winning the gold medal on Saturday, Jaismine shared her emotional journey on social media. She wrote, “I had been suffering from fever for several months. I couldn’t train properly or practise the way I wanted. Even so, I fought with all my strength in this tournament and won the gold medal. I have taken a lot of medicines over the past few months. Since I couldn’t practise before the Commonwealth Games, I was mentally struggling and often had negative thoughts. However, my sports psychologist kept me in a positive frame of mind throughout. I came to the Commonwealth Games with a strong mindset, and I am extremely happy to have won the gold medal.”
