Australian Women Cricketer in Same-Sex Relationship with Teammate: Cricket Australia Forced to Change Its Selection Process!

Brisbane: Australia women’s cricket team vice-captain and former Gujarat Giants (GG) player in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), popularly known as the IPL for women in India, Ashleigh Gardner is ‘known’ in the cricketing world for being in a same-sex relationship. For the past few days, reports about her alleged relationship with another woman, who is also a cricketer from Australia, have been making headlines. It is believed that Cricket Australia has had to make changes to its team selection process following the development.
ㅤ
The 29-year-old Gardner has played 207 international matches for Australia. A spin-bowling all-rounder, she has scored more than 3,500 runs and taken around 250 wickets in international cricket. She married a woman named Monika Wright in April 2025. Several Australian cricketers, including Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy, attended their wedding ceremony.

However, following reports of an alleged relationship between Gardner and young Australian cricketer Georgia Voll, Monika Wright recently separated from Gardner, reportedly accusing her of cheating on her.
Instead of taking away any captaincy role that Gardner had been given by the Australian team, Cricket Australia has changed the selection process.

ㅤ
Georgia Voll is 23 years old. She is an opening batter and has played 24 matches for Australia. In the WPL, she has represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru and UP Warriorz, playing a total of nine matches for the two franchises.
ㅤ
Cricket Australia has now made a change whereby Gardner has been retained as vice-captain, but despite being a senior player, she will not be invited to meetings related to team selection. Gardner will no longer be part of selection committee meetings when the selectors discuss whether her alleged new partner, Georgia Voll, should be selected in the squad for a particular series.
ㅤ
Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg said, “We were aware of the relationship between Gardner and Georgia Voll even before reports about their relationship became public. To ensure that the issue of a personal relationship does not enter the selection process in any way, we have kept Gardner away from this part of the team selection process.”
