Nagoya (Japan): The Asian Games are yet to begin, but Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team have already reached the semi-final without even stepping onto the field! Bangladesh were scheduled to face China in the quarter-final, but the match was called off because of a wet outfield. As Bangladesh were ranked higher than China in the T20 rankings, they were awarded a walkover and advanced directly to the semi-final.
The match was scheduled to be played at the Kariya Sports Park in Nishin City, Aichi Prefecture. As the ground was unfit for play following rain, even the toss was not held. Bangladesh will face the winner of Friday’s match between India and Japan in the semi-final. Bangladesh are ranked 10th in the ICC Women’s Rankings, while China are as low as 36th.
Pakistan Win After a Tough Battle
On Thursday, Pakistan and Thailand met in the women’s quarter-final, with Pakistan securing a hard-fought victory. The match started late because of the wet conditions. Thailand scored 91 for four in their allotted 11 overs, while Pakistan had already lost four wickets for 47 runs.
However, after Shawal Zulfiqar’s 25 runs, captain Fatima Sana contributed 21 runs to help Pakistan chase down the target, finishing on 92 for seven in 10.4 overs. Pakistan secured the victory with just two balls to spare. Thailand’s off-spinner Onicha Kamkhuempu was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets.
India-Pakistan Final Could Be on the Cards
Pakistan have reached the semi-final, where they will face either Sri Lanka or Malaysia. India, meanwhile, will take on Japan in the semi-final. If both India and Pakistan win their respective semi-finals, they could meet in the final. In the recently concluded Asia Cup, India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets on September 5.
