Kolkata: Ravichandran Ashwin has raised serious questions over the captaincy of Riyan Parag, criticizing his decision not to rely on an experienced spinner like Ravindra Jadeja in a crucial moment.
During the match between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Jadeja delivered an impressive spell, taking two wickets for just eight runs, with one over still remaining. Despite this, Parag opted to go with an inexperienced pacer, Brijesh Sharma, in the death overs — a move that ultimately cost Rajasthan the match.

Ashwin’s direct question
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin questioned:
“Why was Jadeja, the most successful spinner in the match, not given his fourth over?”
He believes that had Jadeja bowled that final over, he could have dismissed Rinku Singh and potentially turned the game in Rajasthan’s favor.
How Rinku Singh sealed the win
Chasing a target of 156, Kolkata held their nerve in the final overs. Rinku Singh played a match-winning knock of 53* off 34 balls, guiding his team to a thrilling victory.
In the 20th over bowled by Brijesh Sharma, Rinku struck two boundaries and a six to finish the game. Notably, Rajasthan still had one over of Jadeja and two overs of Nandre Burger left, but Parag chose to hand the 18th and 20th overs to Brijesh — a decision that proved costly.

What explanation did Riyan Parag give?
After the match, Parag defended his decision, stating:
The presence of left-handed batters influenced his tactical shift
Although the spinners were performing well, he preferred pace in the death overs
With Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy settling in, he opted against continuing with spin
Ashwin’s key allegations
Ashwin strongly criticized Parag’s decision-making, highlighting several points:
- Ignoring a world-class spinner like Jadeja was a major error
- A bowler who conceded just 8 runs in 3 overs deserved his fourth over
- Parag relied more on his own off-spin than Jadeja’s experience
- Handing death overs to an inexperienced bowler was a risky move
- Jadeja could have taken Rinku’s wicket and changed the result
- Losing without using your best bowler reflects poor strategy
- It creates a sense of unfair treatment towards bowlers
The incident has sparked fresh debate around captaincy and match management, particularly the importance of trusting experienced players in high-pressure situations.
