New York: Germany’s Alexander Zverev defeated American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the US Open men’s final here on Sunday to win the second Grand Slam title of his career in 2026. Interestingly, Shelton’s girlfriend arrived late to watch the match, but by then Shelton was already struggling and he eventually suffered defeat. Zverev’s girlfriend could not attend the important final, but immediately after winning the title, Zverev contacted her on his mobile phone and celebrated the victory with her.
Zverev had already won the French Open title in June, making 2026 a highly successful year for him. He missed out on the Wimbledon title after losing the final in July, but has now become US Open champion for the first time. He had narrowly missed out on the US Open trophy in 2020.
For Ben Shelton, this was an opportunity to become the first American male player since 2003 to win the US Open title, but he missed the chance. Andy Roddick was the last American man to win the title, in 2003. Shelton also had an opportunity to become the first Black player to win the tournament since 1968, when Arthur Ashe became US Open champion.
Shelton’s girlfriend Trinity Rodman is a well-known American footballer. She had an important football match of her own on Sunday and therefore could not watch her boyfriend Shelton’s tennis match from the beginning. She arrived at the stadium later, but Shelton lost shortly afterwards.
Zverev’s girlfriend Sophia Thomalla is a well-known German television actress. She was busy with an important TV show and therefore could not travel to New York to watch her boyfriend Zverev’s match. However, Zverev went on to win the title.
