Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi’s Film ‘HAQ’ Faces Legal Challenge as Shah Bano’s Family Seeks Stay

The upcoming film HAQ, starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi, has encountered a significant legal obstacle just days before its scheduled release on November 7. The legal heirs of Shah Bano Begum have petitioned the Indore High Court, seeking an immediate halt to the film’s release.

In their plea, filed through Advocate Tousif Warsi, the family alleges that HAQ is offensive to the sentiments of the Muslim community and presents Sharia law in a derogatory and misogynistic light. A central claim in the petition is that the filmmakers proceeded to depict Shah Bano Begum’s life story without obtaining any consent or legal authorization from her family.

The Indore High Court is scheduled to hear the matter shortly. The film’s producers are being represented by a legal team that includes Hitesh Jain of Parinam Law and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik.

This legal action follows a prior notice sent by the family to the filmmakers, a development previously reported by India Today. The notice accused the producers of defaming Shah Bano and violating her personality and publicity rights by using her personal story without permission.

Speaking to India Today, Advocate Tousif Z. Warsi emphasized the family’s concerns. “Since Shah Bano’s personal life is portrayed in the movie, and given that it runs for over two hours, we are unaware of what events have been shown, or how they have been represented,” he stated. “Therefore, the storyline and the central theme of the movie must be disclosed to her legal heirs before its release.”

While the film’s trailer has been received positively, the controversy has sparked considerable public debate surrounding its release.
