Sonia Gandhi Slams Waqf Bill and One Nation, One Election Bill as Constitutional Threats

In a fiery address at the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting, Sonia Gandhi, a senior leader of the Congress party, sharply criticized the Modi government’s recent legislative moves, accusing them of undermining India’s Constitution. She described the Waqf Bill, recently passed in the Lok Sabha, as a blatant attack on constitutional principles, alleging it was forced through the lower house with little regard for proper debate. Gandhi framed the legislation as part of a broader strategy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to deepen societal divisions and maintain a state of constant polarization.

Gandhi also took aim at the One Nation, One Election Bill, calling it yet another attempt to subvert the Constitution. She reiterated the Congress party’s firm opposition to the proposal, which seeks to synchronize national and state elections. Speaking to Congress MPs, she warned that the Modi government’s policies are pushing the country toward a dangerous future where the Constitution exists only in name, while its core values are systematically dismantled.

Gandhi accused the government of harboring intentions to transform India into a surveillance state, urging party lawmakers to highlight this agenda to the public. She painted a grim picture of a nation sliding into an abyss under the current administration, emphasizing that the Congress must expose these efforts to erode democratic foundations. Her statements reflect growing tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition as contentious legislative battles continue to unfold.
