New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday rebuked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his claim that more than 2,000 kilometres of Indian territory had been annexed by China, stating that a “true Indian” would not make such a remark. During his 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress leader claimed that China had occupied 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory and Chinese troops were “thrashing Indian soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh”.
How did you know about 2,000 km being annexed by the Chinese?, the top court asked, while hearing Gandhi’s plea challenging the defamation case. It stressed, If you’re a true Indian, you wouldn’t say it. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih further reprimanded Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, asking, You being leader of the Opposition, why would you say these things? Why will you not ask these questions in Parliament?.
Gandhi approached the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court, on May 29, dismissed his plea challenging the summoning order and the criminal complaint. Responding to the Supreme Court’s remarks, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, reshared on X his earlier statement in Parliament, where the BJP leader had called Gandhi’s comments a false narrative and asserted that China has not taken even an inch of land in Arunachal Pradesh.
People will ask about Bharat Jodo Yatra, here and there, Ashok Gahlot and Sachin Pilot and whatnot. But they will not ask a single question about China capturing 2000 square kilometres of Indian territory, killing 20 Indian soldiers and thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh. The Prime Minister of India is the only person in the country who is under the impression that the Chinese have not taken any land from India. The Congress leader also claimed that former Army personnel told him many patrolling points that were once within Indian territory are now firmly under Chinese control.
