10 Dead, 20 Hurt in Horrific Head-On Bus Crash in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: A devastating head-on collision between two state-run passenger buses claimed at least 10 lives and left 20 others injured on Sunday evening near Kummangudi in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district, according to police reports.

The crash took place approximately five kilometres from Pillaiyarpatti, within the Tirupattur region.

A police officer at the site informed that at least 10 individuals had been killed, with 20 passengers sustaining injuries. He noted that prompt rescue actions by bystanders and other travellers played a crucial role in extracting several trapped victims from the severely damaged buses.

One bus was en route from Tiruppur to Karaikudi, while the opposing vehicle was travelling from Karaikudi toward Dindigul district.

Images captured at the scene revealed the driver’s compartment of one bus entirely torn open.

Footage from the location depicted bodies arranged in a line on the roadside. In one clip, a woman could be seen leaping from the front of a bus after its windshield was shattered. Another injured woman was observed seated on the ground, with blood streaming from her forehead.

Emergency responders quickly transported the wounded to nearby medical facilities. Authorities stated that further information regarding the accident’s cause and the current status of those receiving treatment would be released soon.

This incident marks the second serious head-on bus collision in southern Tamil Nadu in less than a week.

Just days earlier, six people lost their lives in Tenkasi district when two private buses slammed into each other. In that case, officials pointed to reckless driving by one of the vehicles as a potential factor.
