In a huge relief to the Mamata Banerjee government, the Supreme Court on Tuesday decided to overturn the Calcutta High Court’s decision to order a CBI probe into the creation of supernumerary or additional posts for Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruitment back in 2022.
However, when the matter went before the High Court, it ruled that the creation of the additional posts was “not legal.” The High Court’s division bench directed the central probing agency to take members of the cabinet into custody for questioning in connection with the decision.
After the Supreme Court paused the High Court’s order allowing a CBI probe, it finally dismissed the directive today, observing that the High Court wasn’t justified in directing the probe. The state government’s order, dated May 19, 2022, was issued to fill supernumerary posts of assistant teachers, including physical education and work education teachers, as well as non-teaching staff in recognized aided and sponsored schools to absorb waitlisted candidates.
