‘Republic of Balochistan’ Trends on X as Activists Declare Independence from Pakistan

A surge of online activity on Wednesday saw “Republic of Balochistan” trending on the social media platform X, following a declaration of independence by Baloch activists. The development coincided with heightened tensions between India and Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgam attacks, providing momentum for the Baloch independence movement.
Supporters widely circulated a proposed map of an independent Balochistan, along with videos showing demonstrators waving the Balochistan flag. Prominent activist Mir Yar Baloch played a central role in the declaration, posting on May 9 that the “collapse of terrorist Pakistan is near.” In his statement, he asserted Balochistan’s independence and appealed to the Indian government to permit the establishment of an official Baloch office and embassy in New Delhi.
Mir Yar also addressed the United Nations, urging global recognition of the “Democratic Republic of Balochistan.” He called for an international summit to support their cause and requested funding to develop a national currency and passport infrastructure.
In a separate post, Mir Yar expressed solidarity with India amid its conflict with Pakistan, stating, “Dear Narendra Modi ji, you are not alone. You have the backing of 60 million Baloch patriots.” Photos shared on X showed Baloch citizens holding placards affirming their support for India, with some proclaiming, “Balochistan and its people are the government of Bharat.”
Meanwhile, unrest escalated on May 12 in the Balochistan region when armed militants overran a security checkpoint in the Kachhi district and erected barricades in the Rarhsham area of Barkhan. In response, local authorities launched military operations across several zones.
According to a statement from the Assistant Commissioner of Zehri, areas including Anjeera, Najjeera, Archino, Garm-aap, Gazzan, and Balbal-as were designated as sensitive zones. Local media outlet The Balochistan Post reported that more than 40 military vehicles and a substantial number of troops were deployed across the affected regions.
