Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended an 18-year quest for glory by clinching the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 title, defeating Punjab Kings in a thrilling final on June 3, 2025. The victory sparked widespread celebrations, with former team owner Vijay Mallya joining the chorus of congratulations via social media. Mallya, who founded the franchise in 2008, expressed his joy over RCB’s long-awaited success, highlighting his role in shaping the team’s early years.
In a post on X, Mallya wrote, “RCB are IPL Champions finally after 18 years. Superb campaign right through the 2025 tournament. A well-balanced team Playing Bold with outstanding coaching and support staff. Many congratulations! Ee sala cup namde!!” The phrase, translating to “This time, the cup is ours,” echoed the fervent chant of RCB’s passionate fanbase. In another post, he reflected on his contributions, stating, “When I founded RCB, it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years. I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB DeVilliers who remain an indelible part of RCB history.”
Mallya’s posts, shared from his account @TheVijayMallya, underscored his pride in selecting Virat Kohli, who has remained a cornerstone of the franchise since its inception. Kohli’s loyalty was rewarded as RCB overcame Punjab Kings in a nail-biting six-run victory to claim their maiden IPL trophy. The win marked a historic moment for the franchise, leaving Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings as the only two original IPL teams from 2008 yet to secure the title.
The final, held at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, saw RCB’s well-rounded performance outshine Punjab Kings. Mallya’s acknowledgment of the team’s coaching and support staff highlighted the collective effort behind the triumph.
