Villagers Accused of Aiding Rape Suspect’s Escape in Bulandshahr

MEERUT: In a shocking incident in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, a 45-year-old man accused of rape, identified as Mohd Afzal, escaped police custody on September 4, allegedly with assistance from villagers, including the local gram pradhan, Mohd Rouf. That police have filed an FIR against Rouf and over 30 villagers for their role in facilitating Afzal’s flight from justice in Ahmedgarh village.

According to authorities, Afzal was wanted for raping a 22-year-old woman after luring her with a false promise of marriage. The case was registered on August 28, but Afzal evaded arrest by hiding in local residences. On September 4, two plainclothes constables apprehended him. However, during transit, villagers reportedly confronted the officers, enabling Afzal to flee. Station House Officer Premchand Sharma confirmed the incident, stating that the FIR targets those who obstructed police duties and aided the suspect’s escape.

The incident has raised concerns about community interference in law enforcement operations. The confrontation occurred in Ahmedgarh village, highlighting tensions in the area. Police are now intensifying efforts to recapture Afzal, who remains at large, while investigating the extent of the villagers’ involvement.

This case follows other serious allegations in the region, including claims by the father of a rape victim from RG Kar, who accused the CBI of shielding perpetrators, though no direct connection to Afzal’s case has been established. The Bulandshahr incident underscores challenges faced by police in apprehending suspects in tight-knit communities, where local support can complicate enforcement efforts.

The investigation continues as authorities work to locate Afzal and hold accountable those who allegedly helped him evade capture. The police are determined to address such obstructions to justice, with the FIR serving as a step toward ensuring accountability for all involved parties.
