Banglore : Amid the leadership tussle in Karnataka, and with the Congress high command reportedly expected to decide on any change in the chief minister before the December 1 Parliament session, Rahul Gandhi has responded to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar after a week of his attempts to reach out. The exchange comes at a time when the Congress is facing heightened speculation over possible changes in the state leadership.
Shivakumar is also preparing to leave for Delhi on November 29. He has sought an appointment with Sonia Gandhi, who is scheduled to return to the capital the same day, said sources. A batch of MLAs loyal to Shivakumar, including ministers, travelled to Delhi to press their demand for a change in the Chief Minister’s post. In Karnataka, the alleged “2.5-year power-sharing deal” has triggered infighting between loyalists of Siddaramaiah and his deputy, DK Shivakumar.
With Siddaramaiah midway through his term, Shivakumar’s supporters have stepped up pressure on the party’s top leadership to deliver on what they claim was an earlier agreement. Siddaramaiah’s camp has denied that any formal rotational arrangement exists. They argue he remains committed to completing a full five-year term, and that the so-called pact was never officially sanctioned.
Rahul Gandhi held detailed discussions about the power-transfer arrangement, a possible cabinet reshuffle, and the recent public statements made by senior Congress leaders. He is said to be upset with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah publicly denying any power-sharing agreement and asserting he would complete the full five-year term. “He should not be rejecting the power-sharing discussions in public like this. I will speak to both of them soon,” Rahul reportedly told Priyank, advising both camps not to escalate tensions.
Priyank received a call from the Chief Minister’s Office upon landing in Bengaluru, summoning him to Shakti Bhavan. He briefed Siddaramaiah and later met Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar at his official residence, a sequence interpreted by many within the party as a boost for Shivakumar and a setback for the Chief Minister. Rahul Gandhi, sources added, is keen on ensuring that the Congress vote bank remains intact and does not fragment during any leadership transition. To avoid backlash from key social groups, the party is exploring a balancing formula in case Shivakumar is elevated as Chief Minister.
