The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a 2009-batch IPS officer serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Ropar Range, Punjab, in connection with an ₹8 lakh bribery case. The officer, along with an associate, was detained after a trap operation conducted in Chandigarh. The agency said on Thursday that the two were allegedly involved in demanding and accepting illegal payments from a complainant.
According to the CBI, the officer solicited a bribe of ₹8 lakh as well as monthly illegal payments through his middleman. The payment was allegedly sought to “settle” an FIR filed against the complainant and to ensure that no further punitive action was taken against his business interests.
The Operation
Acting on a complaint, CBI officers caught the associate “red-handed” while collecting ₹8 lakh on behalf of the DIG at Sector 21 in Chandigarh. During the interception, investigators also recorded a phone call with the DIG, who reportedly confirmed receiving the payment details and instructed both the middleman and the complainant to meet him at his office.
The CBI then arrested the officer from his Ropar office along with the associate. Both have been taken into custody and will be produced before a designated court on Friday, October 17.
CBI Recovers ₹5 Crore Cash, 1.5 Kg of Jewellery
Searches were carried out at multiple locations linked to the officer across Punjab and Chandigarh. The agency said the raids led to the recovery of ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kilograms of gold jewellery, high-end vehicles, and firearms. Investigations are ongoing to trace the extent of the assets acquired through alleged illicit means.
The CBI confirmed that further inquiries are under way to uncover additional financial links and possible accomplices in the bribery network.
