PM Modi to visit Japan and China from August 29; first summit with Japan’s PM Ishiba, SCO meet in Tianjin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a four-day trip to Japan and China from August 29 to September 1, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday. This will be his eighth visit to Japan and his first summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

According to the MEA, the two leaders will review the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, covering defence and security, trade and economic ties, technology and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges, alongside discussions on key regional and global developments. The visit is aimed at reaffirming the enduring and “special” friendship between the two nations. Modi will be in Japan from August 29 to 30 for the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit at Ishiba’s invitation.

SCO Summit in China next
From Japan, the Prime Minister will travel to Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit from August 31 to September 1 at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. Leaders from more than 20 countries are expected to attend the August 31 gathering. On the sidelines, Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several participating heads of state and government.

Modi last visited China in 2018 first for an informal summit with Xi in Wuhan in April, followed by the SCO Summit in Qingdao in June and Xi visited India in 2019 for a second informal summit, intended to stabilise ties following the 2017 Doklam standoff.

Relations deteriorated sharply months later after confrontations along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh in April–May 2020 and the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June, which left 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops dead. The two sides reached an understanding on October 21, 2024, to end the LAC standoff, followed by a Modi–Xi meeting in Kazan two days later, where they agreed to revive mechanisms to normalise relations and address the boundary issue.
