PM Modi, President Macron discuss pathways to peace in Ukraine and West Asia, vow to deepen India–France partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he held a “very good conversation” with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which the two leaders reviewed efforts to achieve peaceful resolutions to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India–France strategic partnership.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister noted that the dialogue focused on cooperation toward conflict de-escalation and on strengthening bilateral ties. Macron, in his own update, said the two coordinated positions on the Ukraine war with the aim of moving toward a “just and lasting peace,” emphasizing strong security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe.

Macron added that both sides agreed to expand economic exchanges and deepen strategic collaboration across sectors, framing this as essential to sovereignty and strategic autonomy. Building on the AI Action Summit held in Paris in February, he said Paris and New Delhi are working toward the success of the AI Impact Summit scheduled in the Indian capital in 2026. He also underlined closer coordination in multilateral forums ahead of France’s G7 presidency and India’s BRICS presidency in 2026.

The French President’s remarks come as the United States has stepped up pressure on India over continued imports of Russian oil, accompanied by additional tariffs reportedly up to 50% on several Indian products.

Macron was among European leaders who joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for talks with US President Donald Trump earlier this week. That meeting followed Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on the Ukraine conflict, which concluded without any immediate sign of a breakthrough.
