Odisha Medical Student Allegedly Gangraped During Dinner Outing in Durgapur, Probe Underway

A second-year medical student from Jaleshwar, Odisha, was allegedly gangraped by unidentified men in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district on Friday night. Police said the incident took place outside a private medical college in Durgapur when the student stepped out with a friend for dinner. She is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

According to officials, the survivor’s family lodged a complaint soon after arriving in Durgapur on Saturday morning. The student’s mother alleged the assault occurred around 10 pm when her friend left her alone, and three men accosted her, seizing her phone before taking her to a nearby jungle. The perpetrators reportedly threatened her and demanded money to return her phone.

Police have recorded the survivor’s statement, spoken with her friend, and are reviewing CCTV footage. A forensic team is set to gather evidence from the crime scene. Sources told media agency PTI that the state health department has sought a report from the concerned medical college. The private hospital has been asked to forward details to the Director of Medical Education.

The National Commission for Women is dispatching a team to meet the victim and her family. NCW member Archana Majumdar voiced concern over rising crimes against women in Bengal, urging the chief minister to take stronger action. Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya criticised the TMC government, claiming West Bengal remains unsafe for women.
