Three More Daughters Quit Patna Home of Lalu Prasad’s family

PATNA/NEW DELHI: The public clash between Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya and her brother Tejashwi Yadav, along with his inner circle, over claims of mistreatment and eviction from the family residence has escalated into a broader sibling schism. This unfolding discord points to mounting tensions within the party regarding the leadership choices of its designated successor, following the alliance’s crushing defeat in the recent Bihar assembly elections.

On Sunday, Rohini Acharya unleashed further revelations, asserting that she faced ridicule for providing her “impure kidney” to her father and was wrongly accused of soliciting millions in funds alongside a parliamentary candidacy. In response, three of her sisters—Ragini Yadav, Chanda Yadav, and Rajlakshmi Yadav—departed from their parents’ home in Patna, amplifying the family’s visible fractures.

Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu’s elder son who was disavowed by his father and expelled from the RJD last year, voiced strong disapproval of the alleged disrespect toward Rohini. Lalu Prasad, his younger son Tejashwi, and several relatives have offered no public statements, signaling deep-seated rifts and emotional turmoil. The RJD leadership has similarly refrained from comment, underscoring the sensitivity of the matter.

Certain party insiders indicate that frictions among the siblings have been building for some time, particularly as Tejashwi has solidified his authority over the RJD and relied on a cadre of devoted aides to manage operations. This dynamic has increasingly drawn scrutiny, especially in the aftermath of the electoral setback.

The Bihar assembly elections exposed vulnerabilities in this approach, with the RJD securing just 25 seats out of 143 contested. Rohini Acharya reflected on the party’s diminished standing, questioning what misfortunes had struck the outfit that once ruled Bihar from 1990 to 2005. In a poignant social media message, Tej Pratap Yadav expressed his distress: “Yesterday’s incident has shaken me. But the insult meted out to my sister is intolerable. I tolerated whatever happened to me but her humiliation cannot be tolerated under any condition… The consequence of this injustice will be very dire.”

He pointed fingers at “Jaichands”—a term denoting traitors, interpreted as alluding to Tejashwi’s confidants, such as Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Yadav—for undermining the Yadav lineage. Urging his father to intervene, Tej Pratap stated, “Just one nod, and the people of Bihar will bury these Jaichands themselves. This fight is not for any party; it is for the honour of the family, the dignity of the daughter, and the self-respect of Bihar.”

Television broadcasts captured the three sisters arriving at Patna airport with their children, boarding a flight believed to be bound for Delhi. They declined media inquiries. This exit occurred shortly after Rohini Acharya’s advice to married women: “Look after your in-laws and families and take care of your children” instead of prioritizing parental needs. In a raw online post, she lamented, “I would tell all married women never to do anything to save their parents, and if they have a brother, they should ask him to donate his own kidney or ask his Haryanavi friend to do so.” She described her donation as a grave error, undertaken without consulting her husband or in-laws, and without regard for her three children’s prospects.

Previously, Rohini detailed instances of verbal abuse, physical threats—including a raised slipper—and overall degradation. She claimed her parents, former chief ministers Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, were in tears, attributing her ordeal to Sanjay Yadav and Rameez Nemat Khan, the latter from Uttar Pradesh and reportedly a close ally of Tejashwi. While implicating her brother, she reserved much of her ire for his associates.

These events stem directly from the RJD’s poor showing in the Bihar polls, where Tejashwi was formally positioned as the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial hopeful. In a related development, the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] urged Lalu Prasad to address the turmoil. Party spokesperson Neeraj Kumar remarked, “She is the daughter of entire Bihar, then why are you silent, Lalu ji… Please break your silence.”
