The Karnataka government has placed a senior police officer under suspension following the widespread circulation of videos on Monday that allegedly depict him in inappropriate situations with women at his workplace.
K Ramachandra Rao, who serves as Director-General of Police for the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, faces disciplinary action after the controversial footage went viral across social media platforms. The videos purportedly show the uniformed officer in close physical contact with multiple women during office hours, with the individuals appearing in varying attire suggesting visits on different dates.
Along with the video clips, an audio recording allegedly capturing an intimate phone conversation between Rao and a woman has also been widely shared online.
The 59-year-old officer, who belongs to the 1993 batch of the Indian Police Service and is due to retire in July, has rejected the allegations, describing the content as doctored. Speaking to the media on Monday, Rao asserted that the footage is eight years old, dating back to his earlier assignment in Belagavi, and has been digitally altered. He stated he was unaware whether anyone had tried to blackmail him using the material.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed he had taken note of the videos and committed to action following a complete investigation. Addressing reporters in Nandgad village in Belagavi district, he declared that anyone found guilty of misconduct would face consequences.
This marks the second time in recent months that Rao has been suspended from duty. In March 2025, authorities arrested his stepdaughter, Kannada actress Ranya Rao, 32, on charges of smuggling 14.2 kilograms of gold from Dubai. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence made the arrest, and she remains incarcerated.

The state government had suspended Rao following his stepdaughter’s arrest but lifted the suspension in August 2025, allowing him to resume his position. The fresh suspension comes just months after his reinstatement and weeks before his scheduled retirement.
The controversy has erupted at a sensitive time, with the chief minister having recently voiced strong concerns about maintaining discipline and integrity within the police force.
