80 Held in Brutal Killing of Bihar Campaigner as Mokama Tensions Boil Over

Patna: Bihar Police have detained 80 individuals, among them JD(U) Mokama candidate Anant Singh and two aides, in the fatal assault on Jan Suraaj Party worker Dular Chand Yadav, a senior officer confirmed on Sunday.

Singh, along with associates Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, was taken into custody late Saturday night from his Barh residence, roughly 200 km from the state capital. A local court swiftly remanded the trio to 14 days in judicial custody.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma told PTI that five separate FIRs have been lodged over the killing and linked violence. “Eighty arrests have been made so far, with more likely as probes continue,” he said.

Yadav, 45, succumbed while canvassing for Jan Suraaj nominee Piyush Priyadarshi in Mokama on Thursday. The post-mortem report, cited by the SSP, lists cardiorespiratory failure triggered by massive internal trauma to the heart and lungs from a blunt object. “Evidence points squarely to homicide,” Sharma added.

With Mokama now a flashpoint ahead of polls, authorities have blanketed the constituency in security. Thirteen companies of Central Armed Police Force, two Special Task Force units, and four Quick Response Teams patrol the streets.

State DGP Vinay Kumar vowed zero tolerance for poll-code breaches. “Anyone taking law into their own hands will face the full force of justice,” he warned.

The arrests drew sharp reaction from RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who branded the episode proof of “jungle raaj” returning to Bihar. “This should have happened sooner. Murders are routine now—recall the father-son killings in Ara,” he said.

Investigators are combing CCTV footage, witness accounts, and seized weapons as the dragnet widens. Police say every candidate in the fray remains under round-the-clock surveillance to prevent further bloodshed.
