Dhruv Rathee Removes AI Video On Sikh History Following Religious Backlash

Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has taken down a recently uploaded artificial intelligence-generated video on Sikh history after objections from prominent Sikh religious bodies. The video, titled Banda Singh Bahadur Ki Katha, featured animated depictions of Guru Gobind Singh, the Sahibzadas, and other Sikh warriors, sparking criticism from Sikh institutions and community leaders.

Acting Akal Takht jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj condemned the content, stating, “I condemn the AI-based video made by Dhruv Rathee. This video should be removed immediately. The SGPC should also contact the ministry concerned and have it taken down.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami asserted that Sikh history is sacred and not to be represented through film or animation. “The history of Sikh Gurus and their families is sacred. No one has the right to misrepresent it. The SGPC has already passed resolutions banning films or animations of Sikh Gurus. Such representations go against Sikh principles,” he said.

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) also lodged a formal complaint with Delhi Police. Former DSGMC president and Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa remarked, “Dhruv Rathee has insulted Sikh history and sentiments. Depicting Guru Gobind Singh Ji as a crying child is a violation of Sikh values. A case should be filed under Section 295A.”

Responding to the criticism, Rathee had initially stated, “Members of the Sikh community say that it is wrong to show the Gurus in animation. People can share their views on social media. After that, I will delete the video or take another step.” Subsequently, Rathee removed the video from his channel following the public outcry and the formal objections raised. He shared that he is taking the step as he does not, “want this to become a political or religious controversy”.
