New Delhi – Residents of Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram awoke to unexpected rainfall on Friday, compounding the region’s already severe cold wave and prompting expectations of further temperature drops across the National Capital Region.
The showers arrived just one day after Delhi logged a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday at Safdarjung observatory, marking the third-lowest reading this winter season. That figure was 1.1 degrees below the seasonal norm, while a persistent sharp chill kept daytime highs suppressed across various monitoring stations.
Dense fog continued to blanket the area on Friday morning, as captured in local visuals, adding to the challenging weather conditions.

Delhi has experienced lingering cold wave and foggy conditions since the start of 2026. The city recorded its first cold day on January 6, with a minimum of 7.6 degrees Celsius—0.7 degrees below normal. Another followed on January 7, when the maximum reached only 16.7 degrees Celsius (2.3 degrees below normal) and the minimum was 8.6 degrees Celsius (1.7 degrees below average), according to reports from news agency PTI.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) defines a cold day as occurring when minimum temperatures dip below 10 degrees Celsius or when maximum temperatures are 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal.
With the fresh rainfall exacerbating the bite of winter, authorities and residents are monitoring developments closely as the cold spell shows no immediate signs of easing.
