Cyclone Senyar: Tamil Nadu Braces for Intensifying Storm as IMD Issues Urgent Alerts

Heavy downpours lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, heightening concerns as Cyclone Senyar gathers strength in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted intense rainfall across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, while a brewing low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal edges closer to the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastlines.

In its latest bulletin, the IMD cautioned that the cyclonic storm Senyar, currently positioned over the Strait of Malacca and nearby parts of Northeast Indonesia, will trigger isolated bouts of heavy to very heavy precipitation in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on November 26 and 27. The agency elaborated: “Under its influence of Cyclonic storm ‘Senyar’ over Strait of Malacca and adjoining Northeast Indonesia, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 26th & 27th November.”

Further intensifying the alert, the IMD reported a depression forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal, along with adjacent zones of Southeast Sri Lanka and the Equatorial Indian Ocean. This system is poised to strengthen rapidly, shifting north-northwest across the southwest Bay of Bengal and near the Sri Lanka coast, aiming directly for the shores of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh over the next 48 hours.

The weather authority detailed the trajectory on Wednesday: A low-pressure area has emerged in the southwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding regions of Southeast Sri Lanka and the Equatorial Indian Ocean, spurred by Cyclone Senyar’s influence. “It is very likely to move nearly north-northwestwards and intensify into a depression during next 24 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to intensify further and continue to move north-northwestwards across the southwest Bay of Bengal towards North Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts during subsequent 48 hours,” the IMD stated, flagging potential disruptions including rains in Chennai and nearby Tamil Nadu locales.

The IMD’s cyclone watch underscores the storm’s persistence in the Strait of Malacca. “Cyclonic Storm Senyar is active over the Strait of Malacca. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Nov 26–27, and heavy rain on Nov 28–29, 2025,” the department added, urging vigilance in affected areas.

As the system advances, coastal communities in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry remain on high alert, with the IMD’s projections signaling a potent weather event that could test regional preparedness amid the late-season cyclone threat.
