C.P. Radhakrishnan Set to Be Sworn In as India’s 15th Vice President

New Delhi : Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, recently elected as India’s 15th Vice President, will take the oath of office on Friday morning, September 12, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath during a ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m., according to sources cited by The Hindu. The event will mark Radhakrishnan’s formal assumption of the vice-presidential role following his victory in the election held on September 9, 2025.

The swearing-in ceremony will see the attendance of key political figures, including the Leaders of Opposition from both Houses of Parliament, as invitations have been extended by the government. Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar is also expected to be present. The ceremony will be followed by a meeting convened by Radhakrishnan with all floor leaders of the Rajya Sabha at 12:30 p.m. The announcement of this meeting, made late on Thursday evening, has caused some inconvenience among leaders who are currently in their constituencies.

Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee, secured a decisive win in the vice-presidential election, garnering 452 votes against the opposition’s candidate, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. The election, overseen by Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody, saw a 98.2% turnout with 767 of 781 eligible MPs casting their votes. The victory margin of 152 votes highlighted Radhakrishnan’s strong support within the electoral college.

The oath-taking ceremony, deemed auspicious by an officiating priest, underscores the significance of Radhakrishnan’s new role as both Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Senior NDA leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed confidence in Radhakrishnan’s ability to uphold constitutional values and foster constructive parliamentary discourse, as noted in a statement posted on X.
