Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Slams Govt After Two Newborns Die Of Rat Bite In Indore’s MY Hospital

New Delhi : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government after two newborn babies died at the state-run Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital in Indore allegedly of rat bites. In response, hospital staff, who were responsible for the infants’ safety, were suspended and an investigation into the matter was launched.

This is no accident, this is outright murder. This incident is so horrific, inhuman, and insensitive that even hearing about it sends shivers down the spine. A mother has been robbed of her child, simply because the government failed to fulfil its most basic responsibility, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha wrote in Hindi on X.

The newborns were bitten by rats on the intervening night of August 30-31. One suffered injury to the hand and the other in the shoulder. One of them, weighing just 1.2 kilograms, died on Tuesday. Although doctors maintain that the cause of death was severe infection and congenital complications, the presence of rats in a neonatal ward triggered outrage over negligence and unhygienic conditions at the hospital. The second infant died on Wednesday.

Dr Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean of MGM Medical College, acknowledged the breach in safety protocols and said that a high-level committee had been formed to investigate the matter. The administration, as always, says – There will be an investigation – but the question is – when you can’t even ensure the safety of newborn children, what right do you have to run the government? PM Modi and the Chief Minister of MP should hang their heads in shame, Rahul continued the salvo.

The Rae Bareli MP further claimed that since there was “privatisation” of the health sector, good treatment only belonged to the rich and the government hospitals left for the poor were no longer safe and had become “dens of death”. According to doctors, both infants who died were admitted to the hospital in an extremely fragile condition.
