CBI To Question TVK Chief Vijay On Delays, Safety Lapses

Chennai : Nearly four months after a deadly stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu claimed 41 lives, actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay is set to face questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Delhi on Monday. The agency is expected to question him on decisions taken before and during the event, including whether delays and departures from agreed plans worsened crowd pressure at the venue.

This includes proof of permissions obtained for the event, crowd control strategies, the number of volunteers deployed and the level of emergency preparedness put in place. Investigators are also examining coordination with authorities, seeking records of all communication between TVK organisers and police or district officials before and during the rally.

Another key area of focus is Vijay’s movement plan on the day of the event. The CBI is investigating the timeline of his arrival and public appearance, as well as whether changes to the schedule, including a reported delay of more than seven hours, contributed to the crowd swelling beyond manageable levels. According to officials, the CBI has asked for details on how safety and security measures were planned and implemented to handle the large crowd.

The Karur stampede case was initially investigated by a Special Investigation Team before being transferred to the CBI following directions from the Supreme Court, which asked the central agency to take over the probe. Since then, the CBI has questioned several TVK office bearers as part of its efforts to fix responsibility. The summons to Vijay follows a notice issued by the agency earlier this month.
