CBI Cracks Down on Fake Amazon Call Center Scam in Igatpuri

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has dismantled an illicit call center operation in Igatpuri, Nashik, arresting five individuals involved in a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme. The group, operating from a rented resort premises, allegedly posed as representatives of Amazon Support Services to deceive victims in the United States, Canada, and other countries, according to agency officials.

The suspects, identified as Vishal Yadav, Shehaz, Durgesh, Abhay Raj (also known as Raja), and Sameer (also known as Kalia or Sohail), were apprehended following a CBI investigation. On August 8, 2025, the agency filed a case against six Mumbai-based individuals, along with other unidentified private persons and bank officials, for orchestrating a criminal conspiracy. The accused are alleged to have engaged in financial fraud by making phishing and deceptive calls, impersonating Amazon support staff to trick victims into parting with their money.

A CBI official revealed that the fraudulent call center employed approximately 60 operators, including dialers, verifiers, and closers, to execute the scam. The operation targeted foreign nationals, defrauding them through payments made via gift cards and cryptocurrency. The illicit proceeds were funneled through the fake call center, which was strategically set up in Igatpuri, Nashik, Maharashtra.

The CBI’s swift action underscores its ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and protect unsuspecting victims from such deceptive schemes. The investigation continues to uncover the full extent of the network and identify any additional accomplices involved in the operation.
