Authorities probing the fatal BMW collision in Delhi have uncovered that Gaganpreet Makkad, the driver responsible for striking and killing 52-year-old Navjot Singh, maintains significant connections to the medical facility she transported the victims to a site approximately 20 kilometers from the crash location, despite nearer alternatives being available.
According to records from the Union ministry of corporate affairs (MCA) and sources close to the investigation, Makkad’s father, Javinder Singh, serves as a director and promoter in two firms, Nulife Advanced Diagnostics Private Limited and Nulife Luxury Realtors Private Limited. These entities share the identical registered address as the company operating the hospital, identified on the MCA site as HK Nulife Hospitals Private Limited, located at House No. 1616, First Floor, Outram Line, GTB Nagar.
Furthermore, the MCA records indicate that one of the directors of HK Nulife Hospitals Private Limited also holds positions in the two companies associated with Makkad’s father. A high-ranking police official involved in the probe revealed that Javinder Singh is the maternal uncle of Dr. Harish Kumar, who established the Nulife Hospital in 1992. Dr. Kumar succumbed to complications during the Covid-19 outbreak, and the hospital is now managed by his children, the officer noted.
Investigators highlighted that Makkad specifically demanded the victims be rushed to this facility, forgoing closer hospitals such as Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, just 7.8 kilometers away, and AIIMS, about 12 kilometers from the incident site. (PTI)
The tragedy unfolded on a Sunday afternoon when Navjot Singh, a deputy secretary in the Union finance ministry, and his wife, Sandeep Kaur, both residents of Hari Nagar in west Delhi, were riding their motorcycle. The BMW sport utility vehicle, purportedly operated by Makkad, veered into the central divider at Dhaula Kuan, flipped over, and collided with their bike. Singh sustained lethal wounds, while Kaur endured several fractures. Makkad was detained the next day and placed in two-day judicial custody.
In her account to authorities, Kaur described imploring Makkad multiple times to head to the closest hospital for urgent care, given her husband’s unconscious state, but her appeals were disregarded. “Right after the impact, we both collapsed. My husband had grave damage to his head, face, and legs. I experienced numerous breaks in my hands and legs, plus head trauma requiring 14 stitches,” she recounted. “I kept urging that woman to go to a nearby hospital for prompt first aid, as my husband was out cold and required immediate treatment. Yet, despite my insistent pleas, she refused to opt for the nearest option.”
During interrogations over the last two days, Makkad explained to officers that she selected Nulife Hospital out of confidence in its care, citing how it had aided her children during their illness in the pandemic, and denied any personal affiliations with the institution.
