Chennai: A grieving parent recounted how actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay broke down in tears during an emotional conversation, just one month after a tragic stampede claimed the lives of 41 people, including several children, at one of his campaign events. The private gathering took place Monday at a resort in Mamallapuram, near Chennai, where Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), hosted nearly all the affected families.
Speaking to ThePrint, family members of the victims described Vijay’s deep remorse for the chaos that unfolded on September 27 in Velusamypuram, Karur district, during a TVK roadshow. The incident resulted in the deaths of 16 women and six children among the 41 fatalities. Vijay expressed regret not only for the loss but also for his inability to visit Karur in person sooner.
“He pledged to support our family in any way possible and inquired about our specific needs,” shared one anonymous parent who lost two children in the tragedy. Overwhelmed by sorrow, the parent added that no immediate demands came to mind amid such profound grief.
This marked Vijay’s inaugural face-to-face engagement with the bereaved since the disaster, despite prompt outreach from other political figures. Out of 38 families impacted, 37 traveled to Chennai for the occasion. The TVK arranged accommodations in 46 rooms at the resort starting Sunday, allowing Vijay to conduct one-on-one sessions throughout Monday, from approximately 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Families waited in a communal hall while entering a secluded room sequentially for discussions lasting up to 30 minutes each. Vijay reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing assistance, with one parent recalling his words: “Consider me your brother; request any help your family requires, including employment or relocation—I will make it happen.”
Previously, Vijay had committed Rs 20 lakh in financial aid per family, funds now transferred to their bank accounts. Although no formal announcement followed the visit, associates emphasized its personal nature, aimed at conveying genuine compassion rather than seeking attention.
A TVK spokesperson explained to ThePrint that an initial plan for October 17 in Karur fell through due to logistical hurdles, including venues withdrawing availability after initial agreements. “We prioritized a secure, heartfelt meeting,” the spokesperson noted.
