Zepto’s Dharavi Facility Shuttered by FDA for Hygiene Violations

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revoked the food business license of a Zepto warehouse in Dharavi, Mumbai, following a surprise inspection that uncovered significant breaches of food safety regulations. The inspection, prompted by a tip from Minister of State for FDA Yogesh Kadam, revealed unsanitary conditions at the facility operated by Kiranakart Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Zepto’s parent company.
FDA officials reported multiple violations, including fungal growth on food items, products stored near stagnant water, and inadequate cold storage temperatures. The facility’s floors were found to be wet and dirty, with food items stored haphazardly, some directly on the ground. Expired products were also not separated from fresh stock, posing potential health risks to consumers.
The license suspension, ordered by Assistant Commissioner (Food) Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, will remain in effect until Zepto addresses all deficiencies and secures approval from the licensing authority.
The FDA’s crackdown extended beyond Dharavi, with inspections at Zepto’s facilities in Bhiwandi, Bandra East, and Borivali revealing additional violations. While notices were issued for Bhiwandi and Bandra East, the Borivali facility faced a temporary suspension but resumed operations after implementing corrective measures approved by the appellate authority.
A Zepto spokesperson responded, stating, “Maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene is non-negotiable. We have already initiated an internal review and are working closely with the concerned authorities to ensure full and swift compliance.”
Separately, Zepto’s Rural Mobilisation Programme has come under fire. The Rajdhani App Workers Union has accused the company’s recruitment partners of slashing wages for delivery agents from small towns and subjecting them to substandard living conditions.
