Will ‘Kaise Haraya’ Sahar Sheikh Remain An AIMIM Corporator ?

Mumbra: AIMIM corporator Sahar Sheikh, who gained widespread attention during the Thane civic polls with her viral “Kaise haraya…” remark, is now facing serious allegations related to a caste certificate. The Thane tehsildar’s office has recommended the registration of an FIR against her father, Yunus Sheikh, following an inquiry that concluded the family allegedly used a fake Other Backward Class (OBC) caste certificate. This development has raised questions about her eligibility in the election, as reported by a TOI report cited in The Economic Times.

The probe was initiated by Tehsildar Umesh Patil after a complaint from Siddiqui Ahmad, whose daughter had contested and lost against Sahar Sheikh in the January 2026 Thane Municipal Corporation elections from Mumbra’s Ward No. 30. The inquiry determined that the certificate in question appeared prima facie fake and that several government agencies may have been misled in the process.

The investigation highlighted multiple discrepancies in the 2011 caste certificate. It did not adhere to the official Maharashtra format, lacked the signature of the sub-divisional officer, and failed to mention the ‘State of Maharashtra’ indicators that pointed towards forgery.

Further, the Sheikh family originally hails from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. Under Maharashtra rules, migrants are required to apply for caste certificates using Form 10. However, the family reportedly obtained it through Form 8, which is reserved for native residents. Officials suspect documents may have been altered to support this claim. Supporting records, including school documents and a relative’s caste certificate from Uttar Pradesh, did not establish a valid connection to Maharashtra.

Sahar Sheikh had secured her own caste certificate from the Mumbai city collector’s office in 2018, even though she resided in Thane. The tehsildar’s report viewed this as an attempt to bypass local scrutiny, noting that it should have been issued by Thane authorities. The subsequent validity certificate from the Mumbai Caste Scrutiny Committee was also flagged as questionable.

The tehsildar has recommended immediate cancellation of all related caste certificates and the filing of a criminal case against Yunus Sheikh for cheating and fraud. The report has been forwarded to the sub-divisional officer and shared with the Mumbai and Thane collectorates as well as the caste scrutiny committee for necessary further action.
