Mumbai Faces Wet Week: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for August 13

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall for Mumbai and Thane in the coming days, with a yellow alert in place for August 13, when heavier showers and stormy conditions are expected.

According to the IMD’s Sunday, August 10 bulletin, both cities are highly likely to see light to moderate rain or thundershowers from August 10 to August 12, with similar weather returning on August 14. The five-day outlook indicates persistent wet conditions, urging residents to prepare accordingly.

The IMD has warned of a notable increase in rainfall on August 13. The yellow alert highlights the risk of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph in isolated areas. Such weather could disrupt daily routines and pose challenges for commuters, especially in flood-prone zones.

Mumbai’s rainfall this season has been inconsistent. Over the August 8-10 weekend, the city saw intermittent showers, with the IMD’s Colaba observatory recording 1.6 mm and Santacruz noting 3.1 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on August 10. Since the monsoon began on June 1, Colaba has recorded 998 mm and Santacruz 1,366 mm.

Despite recent rains, July 2025 was unusually dry for Mumbai. Santacruz recorded only 797.3 mm of rain, well below the average of 919.9 mm, making it the driest July since 2016.

The IMD’s forecast underscores the monsoon’s erratic nature this year, with dry spells followed by sudden intensifications. On August 13, the yellow alert signals potential disruptions from thunderstorms and winds, particularly in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. Commuters should brace for possible delays.

Residents are advised to stay updated on IMD forecasts as the week unfolds. The alert highlights the need for caution, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding. Mumbai’s infrastructure often faces challenges during such weather, but timely warnings aim to reduce disruptions. By staying prepared, citizens can navigate the wet spell safely.
