Thane: A routine hospital visit over menstrual problems turned into a deeply unsettling experience for a 17 year old girl in Thane after three pregnancy tests at a government hospital reportedly showed positive results. A test conducted later at a private hospital, however, came back negative.
The incident, reported from the Kalyan Dombivli area, has raised questions about the accuracy of the tests carried out at Shastri Nagar Hospital and whether proper medical procedures were followed.
The teenager had gone to the government hospital seeking treatment for a menstrual related problem. During her visit, she was reportedly tested for pregnancy three times. According to the report, all three tests indicated that she was pregnant, and the information was conveyed to her family.
The results naturally left the family shocked and concerned. Unsatisfied with what they had been told, they decided to seek another medical opinion and took the girl to a private hospital.
The second hospital reportedly conducted another pregnancy test, which came back negative. Doctors there treated the teenager for her menstrual problem and eventually discharged her with medication.
The sharp difference between the results from the two hospitals has since become the centre of the controversy.
Questions are now being raised over how three tests at the government facility could reportedly show pregnancy when a subsequent test at a private hospital did not. At this stage, however, there is no publicly established explanation for the conflicting results.
The matter was reportedly brought up during a Standing Committee meeting. Following the discussion, the Municipal Commissioner ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The inquiry is expected to examine what happened during the teenager’s visit, how the tests were conducted and whether there was any lapse in procedure or medical negligence. There have also been demands for strict action against anyone found responsible. A case could reportedly be considered if the investigation establishes wrongdoing.
For the teenager and her family, the episode has been far more than a simple testing error. What began as a visit for a menstrual health issue ended with the family being told that she was pregnant, only for that information to be contradicted by another hospital.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of reliable diagnostic testing, careful medical procedures and responsible communication with patients, particularly when sensitive medical information is involved.
As of August 12, the inquiry remains crucial to determining exactly how the conflicting results occurred and whether anyone should be held accountable.
