Mumbai: Nandkumar Ramraj Soni parked his tempo at Kaka Keni Chowk in Kandivali West on the night of March 25. When he came back the next morning, the door glass was smashed in, the rear lock forced open, and every cylinder gone all 27 of them. Five were filled. Twenty-two were empty. The thieves took the lot.
Police have registered an FIR and put together multiple teams to trace the suspects. CCTV cameras in the Charkop area caught footage of several individuals and vehicles near the scene. “Efforts are underway to identify them,” police said.
The theft comes at a time when LPG supply anxiety is already running high. Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz part of its retaliation across the Gulf has tightened energy flows globally, and in Mumbai, that has apparently created demand for stolen gas.

Police aren’t only chasing the Charkop thieves. A tip-off led to a separate raid in Worli, where officers found a large stock of domestic and commercial cylinders stored and sold without any authorisation. Cracking down on LPG black marketing has become a stated priority for Mumbai Police.
On the broader supply question, PIB Fact Check posted on X to counter misinformation circulating online. India’s reserve capacity stands at 74 days, with current stock at around 60 days — covering crude oil, petroleum products, and reserves held in underground caverns. “There is no cause for concern regarding availability,” it said. “Avoid panic and rely only on official government sources.”
