Mumbai Seafarer Dixit Solanki Killed In Missile Strike On Oil Tanker In Strait Of Hormuz

Mumbai: A 33-year-old merchant navy sailor from Mumbai lost his life after a missile reportedly struck the oil tanker he was aboard while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical and heavily trafficked shipping routes. The deceased has been identified as Dixit Solanki, a resident of Kandivli.

Solanki was part of the crew on a merchant vessel navigating through the narrow sea corridor when the attack occurred, amid continuing escalations in West Asia. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital passage for a significant share of the world’s daily oil supply, making it both a strategic and increasingly volatile maritime route.

Initial reports indicate the tanker was in transit through the waterway when it was hit by the missile, resulting in the Mumbai sailor’s death. Authorities are currently in the process of verifying further details, while maritime agencies remain on alert, monitoring developments in the region.

Back in Kandivli, the news has come as a devastating blow to Solanki’s family and neighbours. Those who knew him recalled that he had only recently returned to sea duty after taking a break following the death of his mother. Neighbours described the young man as hardworking and dedicated, someone who had chosen the demanding profession of merchant seafaring primarily to provide for his family. Many said he was the household’s sole breadwinner.

In the wake of the incident, the National Union of Seafarers of India has raised serious concerns over the safety of Indian sailors employed on international merchant vessels. The union has urged shipping companies and global maritime authorities to reassess sailing routes that pass through conflict-affected zones and to put stronger crew safety protocols in place. It has also called upon the Government of India to actively monitor the situation and extend all possible support to the bereaved family.

Indian authorities are now expected to engage with shipping companies and diplomatic channels to facilitate the repatriation of Solanki’s mortal remains to Mumbai.
