Mumbai Rains: BMC Declares Holiday Amid Red Alert; Residents Urged To Stay Indoors As Heavy Rain Lashes City

Mumbai: With relentless monsoon showers continuing to batter Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a holiday for schools and colleges as a precautionary measure while issuing an urgent appeal to residents to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary. The decision comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Mumbai under a Red Alert, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and the possibility of widespread waterlogging.

The civic administration said the move has been taken in the interest of student safety as heavy rain continues to disrupt normal life across the city. Authorities have warned that low lying areas could witness flooding, while incidents such as tree falls, road cave ins and traffic disruptions remain a concern during the ongoing spell of intense rainfall.

According to the IMD, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and adjoining parts of the MMR are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. The weather department has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during periods of intense rainfall and high tide, when flooding risks are significantly higher.

The BMC has urged residents to exercise maximum caution by staying away from waterlogged roads, avoiding coastal areas, and remaining alert near old buildings, construction sites and trees that may become unstable due to continuous rainfall. People have also been advised not to venture into flooded streets, as open manholes may be hidden beneath accumulated water. In case of emergencies, citizens have been asked to contact the BMC’s emergency helpline at 1916.

Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has affected several parts of Mumbai, with multiple locations recording exceptionally high rainfall. Waterlogging was reported in various low lying neighbourhoods, while suburban train services experienced delays in some sections after tracks were inundated. Road traffic also slowed considerably in several parts of the city due to flooding and fallen trees, though public transport continued to operate with caution.

Officials have advised commuters to check the latest travel updates before leaving home, as weather conditions may change rapidly. Parents have also been requested to follow official announcements regarding school operations instead of relying on unverified messages circulating on social media.

The current spell of rain is being driven by an active monsoon system over the region. Meteorologists expect intermittent heavy showers to continue, and authorities remain on high alert to respond to any emergencies arising from flooding, landslides, tree collapses or infrastructure damage.

Safety Advisory for Citizens

1.Stay indoors unless travel is essential.
2.Avoid waterlogged roads, subways and flood prone areas.
3.Do not walk or drive through flooded streets due to the risk of hidden open manholes.
4.Keep away from trees, electric poles, damaged structures and construction sites during strong winds.
5.Monitor official IMD and BMC advisories for the latest weather and civic updates.
6.Dial 1916 to report rain-related emergencies or seek civic assistance.

Authorities have reiterated that public cooperation will be crucial as Mumbai continues to face one of the season’s most intense monsoon spells. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, prioritise safety and follow official instructions until weather conditions improve.
