Mumbai Rains Turn Deadly Again: 63 Year Old Man Killed After Tree Crashes Onto Shop In Kurla

Mumbai: Heavy monsoon rains claimed another life in Mumbai on Sunday after a large tree colapsed onto a roadside shop in Kurla (West), killing a 3 year old man and raising fresh concerns over public safety during the city’s ongoing spell of severe weather. The incident is the latest in a series of rain related tragedies that have struck the financial capital in recent days.

The victim, identified as Yunus Kundawala (63), was caught beneath the fallen tree near the BMC Hindi School at Gomes Gown Building in the Naupada Kamani area around 12:40 pm. Emergency responders, including the Mumbai Police Best personnel and civic staff, rushed to the scene and rescued him from the debris. He was taken to Fauzia Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

According to civic officials, rentless rainfall had weakened the tree before it came crashing down onto the shop. Rescue teams cleared the debris and secured the area, while authorities began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The fatality adds to a worrying pattern of monsoon related accidents across Mumbai. Just days earlier, an 11 year old schoolboy lost his life in Chembur after a tree fell on a school vehicle, triggering widespread criticism over the condition and maintenance of ageing trees in the city. Separately, several people were injured in another tree collapse in Santacruz, while a man recently died after falling into an open manhole during heavy rainfall.

Continuous heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life across Mumbai and its metropolitan region, leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion, tree falls and multiple emergency rescue operations. Civic authorities have repeatedly appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain and to report dangerous trees or damaged infrastructure immediately.

Sunday’s tragedy has once again put the spotlight on Mumbai’s preparedness for the monsoon season, with citizens demanding quicker action on hazardous trees and stronger preventive measures to avoid further loss of life as heavy rains continue to lash the city.
